Grotto's Gaming: Rimworld

Welcome to the first edition of Grotto's Gaming. This is something I've wanted to do for a little bit, but I wasn't sure how to go about it 😅. So, I've decided to start with a game I've put a lot of hours into recently. ~Rimworld~.

What is Rimworld?

Rimworld is a colony sim with an AI storyteller who controls the random events. The main objective is to leave the planet you crash landed on. I myself have not accomplished this, mainly because I don't feel the need to leave the planet 😂. You start with just enough to get by for a couple in-game days. The goal at first is to build the necessary rooms, equipment, and growing areas to survive. This is done by assigning colonists to jobs and ordering them around. Once you have the basics it is pretty much up to you where you want to take your colony. You can be good, evil, or somewhere in between. You can focus on building up your colony to thrive, or you can work towards leaving the planet. All the while the AI storyteller will be throwing events at you, some easy, some more difficult, but that all depends on the settings you choose. I usually play on peaceful because I'm not combat focused, but that doesn't mean things don't get difficult here and there.

Why do I enjoy it?

I enjoying the building from the ground up element of this game. I like starting from nothing and getting my colony to thrive. I also enjoy seeing my colonists grow, have families, and seeing what they get up to in general. It's also fairly customisable, and there are a ton of mods you can get. All of that makes it re-playable and allows me to create a multitude of different stories and scenarios. I even have myself and M as characters saved to use when I please. It's addicting to say the least.

Is there anything I don't like?

I haven't experienced everything this game has to offer yet. Especially since I also have a variety of mods enabled. My main gripe with the game was the learning how to play. I had previously tried to play this game a couple years back, but I was quickly overwhelmed by the amount of tabs and management. Thankfully, this time around I enlisted M to help me play. We did this by starting a new save and he walked me through what to do, when to do it, and what to do next. Giving me little pointers and helping if I got stuck. After playing with him beside me for a good few hours, I was able to play on my own. Thankfully it was easier to learn through doing, with assistance. Then I was hooked!

Would I recommend?

Yes I would. But I would also recommend having someone teach you how to play it, in a way that best suits you. There is a tutorial, but in these kinds of games I find even the tutorial can be overwhelming.
